Compassion
We slow down for the person in front of us. Speed is not a virtue when someone is overwhelmed.
Moving Against the Current was started because the care we wanted for the people we love did not exist in the form we needed. So we built it — slowly, carefully, and with the same expectations any family would have for their own.
A lot of programs sound great on a brochure. The hard test isn't the brochure — it's a Tuesday afternoon when the parent is in a work meeting, the kid is dysregulated, and somebody is supposed to show up at the door.
We started MAC because we wanted that door to open every time, with the same trained, warm, person-first staff. That's the whole bar. Everything else we do — the documentation, the job coaching, the training — is in service of that promise.
We named it Moving Against the Current because families navigating developmental delays and IDD do exactly that, every day. The current does not get easier. Good care doesn't fight the current for you — it moves with you, beside you. That's the difference.
These are not posters on a wall. They are the standards we hire to, train to, and fire to.
We slow down for the person in front of us. Speed is not a virtue when someone is overwhelmed.
If we said 4pm, we are there at 3:55. The most radical thing you can do in care is be predictable.
Care happens at the kitchen table, the park, the workplace — not behind a clinic door. Real life is the curriculum.
Every session asks: what can this person do today that they couldn't last week? Always with their pace, never ours.
First names. Real conversations. Choice in every reasonable moment. Adults are treated like adults. Kids are treated like kids.
We don't use clinical language with families unless it's useful. We don't talk down. We don't act like we know your loved one better than you do — because we don't, and never will.
Natavia built MAC around a single standard: the care she'd want for her own. She sets the bar for every plan, owns family relationships personally, and signs off on every care plan that goes out the door.
Every team member who works with a MAC family completes a comprehensive background check, CPR and First Aid certification, and a person-centered care orientation before their first shift. Continuing education is required, not optional.
